July 2023 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the July newsletter! This newsletter contains Full Circle Compost events/other environmental events happening this month, and there is a feature on an eco-business/organization of the month, some fun facts about composting!

July Sustainability/Outdoor Events:

Eco-business/Organization Spotlight:

  • One person’s trash is another person’s treasure! Bring in any used (or even brand new) household items that you are looking to get rid of so they can find a new home instead of being thrown away. You can also look around for anything you may be interested in taking home for yourself!

  • Timing: Open weekly on Thursdays, 5-7 PM

  • “The Arlington Reuse & Recycling Center [33 Ryder St] has set up a pilot program swap shed to facilitate the exchange of select used items in good condition. The service is free, it is run entirely by volunteers, and is available for all Arlington residents” (Swap Shed).

  • Get involved! If you have any other questions about the Swap Shed or are looking to volunteer, you can email: a-townrecyclesandshares@outlook.com

Composting Fun Facts/Trivia of the Month:

  • George Washington was the first president to start composting!

  • Australian Brush Turkeys use compost in their nests!

  • In 2018, Americans recovered over 69 million tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) through recycling, and almost 25 million tons through composting.

Activism in Arlington:

  • Climate Futures Arlington, a public arts installation that aims to inform people on climate change related events in the future, has just finished going up in Arlington! See if you can find their silver markers around town or check out their website for more information.

  • Worried about litter harming local wildlife? There are plenty of organized pickups to help keep Arlington clean, or just get some gloves and do it yourself. If you’re interested in picking up litter on the beaches, check out this coastal sweep opportunity.

  • If you’re an animal lover, check out Save Arlington Wildlife to help out.

Friendly Reminders:

  • If you compost, make sure to check your provider’s website or contact them if you have any questions about what goes in your bin.

  • Keep your yard clean! Make sure that your trash or compost bins are fully sealed if they are kept outside in order to avoid pests or rats. But please, above all, do not use rat poison!

  • When in doubt, throw it out. Recycling productivity will be harmed if there are unclean containers, black containers, or containers that are not accepted by local services. For any questions on what can be recycled, check out the Town of Arlington’s website under their recycling section.

As always, if you are receiving this email and are NOT already signed up for Full Circle Compost Service but would like to begin composting with us, sign up here and find out more information on our website or by emailing us!
